Imbros Gorge is located in the province of Sfakia , the second largest gorge of Crete following the Samaria Gorge. The remarkable scenery combined with its low hiking difficulty make this gorge suitable for a variety of people that wish to explore its environemt . The walking length is 8 km and the course lasts approximately 3 hours, definitely worth seeing.
After approximately 1 hour of walking into the gorge, you will reach the narrowest point of the Gorge. At the end of it, you will find Komitades village , where the bus will take you to Chora Sfakion.
Chora Sfakion or simply Sfakia, is the capital of the mountainous region of Sfakia. The untamed landscape is combined with the quiet , charming seaside settlement. The sandy beach is totally suitable for relaxation after hiking.
Imbros Gorge was the escape route for thousands of allied troops retreating from the north of the island. During the battle of Crete in May 1941 , the troops headed for Chora Sfakion to be collected by ships.
