Due to its siginificant position Heraklion has been throughout centuries the main focus of Byzantine Empire, Ottoman Empire , Venetian Rule etc. All of them have left their marks in the city. Admire the imposing fortress of Koules, that stands in the Harbor, the Venetian Walls which surround the old town, relax in a variety of restaurants or coffee places around Lion's Square (also named as Morozini Fountain). Last but not least, you can definitely visit the Municipal Library , the Art Gallery or one of the numerous byzantine churches.
