Book a Sea Turtle Walk! Get a close look at the nesting beach and learn about sea turtles during a 45-minute walk with an ARCHELON volunteer.
This walk is part of ARCHELON's multi-sectoral environmental awareness program and aims to integrate environmental interpretation as a conservation tool to raise awareness about the nesting beaches, the sand dunes and proper human - sea turtle interactions.
Walk along a part of the nesting beach of Rethymno, where you will have the opportunity to learn about sea turtles, the threats they face, and our conservation work. You will start your walk by learning some interesting facts about sea turtles and their life cycle / biology. There will be stops along the beach, at specific points where we will share information about the fragile ecosystem of sand dunes, and to show you tracks of female sea turtles, hatchlings or sea turtle nests depending on the season. During our walk, you will receive information about the challenges that these incredible protected marine creatures face from human activity and what you can do to assist them.
Please note that you will not see a sea turtle during the tour.

MORE ABOUT ARCHELON AND THE RETHYMNO PROJECT
- ARCHELON is a non-profit organization working to protect sea turtles and their nesting habitats in Greece since 1983. The Rethymno project was launched in 1990 and is the largest in terms of number of nests in Crete. The sea turtle nesting activity extends over 12 kilometers of coastline and has an average of 200 nests per year. The nests are monitored and protected by a team of ARCHELON volunteers from various countries.
- There are other important nesting sites for the Loggerhead sea turtles (Caretta caretta) in Greece, where ARCHELON volunteers monitor and protect more than 4,000 sea turtle nests each summer: Laganas Bay on the island of Zakynthos, Kyparissia Bay in western Greece, and Lakonikos Bay in the Peloponnese.
